All things written...

I have an addiction love of all things hand-written, especially if it was written by or about a family member.  For example...

We received this precious letter in the mail from Maggie, our 6 year old granddaughter, who stayed with us last week.  How cute is this?

We love you, too, Maggie!  Yes, we do!

A few days ago, I found this 2-sided note among some of Granny's diaries.  It was written on March 3, 1942, when my Dad was 9 years old...to his mother.  I have no idea where they might have been, but its possible he was at work with her...not sure since he is asking someone to give this to "Mrs. Croft" ...

This side says "Please give this to Mrs. Croft" ...  it is also dated in Granny's handwriting.

This side says "Mother come out and talk to me"

Will probably never know the details of this one.

Last night, I came across this folded envelope:

I assume it contained her Christmas bonus.  The names that are written on the back are ancestors...I've seen these names before.

Then there is this.  It is the opening page of an Autograph Book from Granny's days at Gem City Business College.

And guess who one of the first "autographs" was from?  Yep, Clinton (Abie) himself!  He must have really wanted to leave an impression because his is the only page out of around 30 that has a picture on it.  I think his self-description fit him well...

"Abie, as sure as you think of anything of a mischief-maker, tiz him".

Here is a picture of the address he listed...508 N. 23rd Street, Cairo, Illinois.

For kicks, I googled the address, and here is what the house looks like today:

There are so many family things in my possession.  But they'll have to wait for another post.  I have to get ready for a birthday party tomorrow.  Will post pictures for everyone to see!

Hope you are all having a WONDERFUL weekend!

  1. I love this post! BTW...Maggie did all this on her own. She asked for help with some of the spelling, but she really wanted to write to you guys. I thought it was wonderful. I love seeing old writings and old pics with the info on them, too. You are doing such a neat job of this blogging gig!

  2. I guess someone didn't care for the covered front porch when they remodeled.

  3. Thanks, Jenn! Again, I am so excited that ya'll are coming to Brownwood tomorrow. Poor Abby and Brice...have you heard what all has happened to them today. I suggested they spend the night in San Antonio...so we will see them tomorrow as well!

Steve, I liked it better the original way. I have so many fond memories from that house.
